Bolo Tie
Any website on vintage costume jewelry must include the goold
old bolo tie. The names Bolo or Bola tie (or Stringtie, or Bootlace
tie) are all correct names for this piece of "jewelry" worn around
the neck. Much like a necklace, more often worn by men. A bolo
tie is a style of necktie consisting of three parts: a) a cord, b) a
slide, c) the tips. Bolo ties usually have a natural looking leather
braided cord or woven cord with metal end tips called aglets. In
some cases small pendants dangle from the aglets. The cord is
decorated by an ornamental piece, many times made of semi
precious or natural stone like turquoise and jasper and often
carved in nature. Polished cabochons are not uncommon.
Invented back in the 1940's, the bolo tie is said to be discovered
by accident when an Arizonan jeweler by the name of Victor
Cedarstaff went horseback riding and a gust of wind blew off his
hat. He wound up with the hat strap around his neck and the
buckle hanging in front and viola! The bolo tie idea was hatched.
Victor received U.S. Patent number 3,126,603 for his fashion
marvel.
Traditional bolo ties were made by North American Indian jewelers
using southwestern materials like silver and turquoise and other
stones with southwestern motifs. Typically bolo ties are
associated with western wear and are more common in the
western areas of the United States. Officially, the bolo tie was
claimed the official neckwear of Arizona in 1971, and in 1987,
New Mexico made the bolo tie the state's official neckwear. But
nowadays, the bolo tie is not just for the southwest anymore.
You'll see them at cocktail parties, on Wall Street, and worn with a
tuxedo, and they are no longer just used by men.
Beautiful cabochons, stones, and carved metalwork are making
the once thought-oddity a genuine fashion must-have for some
women. Comfortable and versatile, one wears a bolo tie with a
closed or open collar, making it much more comfortable to wear
than a standard necktie. And with the gorgeous decorations,
they can be much more artistic fashion statements as well. Be
sure to add a few bolo ties to your vintage costume jewelry
collection.
